Jhulan Goswami & her girls ooze confidence
The Indian women’s cricket team may not get the same attention their more illustrious male counterparts always get ahead of an international tour, but that doesn’t stop the eves from oozing confidence and glamour.
Dressed to kill in Royal blue blazers, an upbeat 14-member women’s team – which will leave for England to participate in the inaugural edition of the Twenty20 World Cup on Thursday – addressed the media at the Karnataka State Cricket Association premises in Bangalore on Wednesday.
“We have a balanced squad with talented youngsters and experienced seniors. After the World Cup in Australia we haven’t played too many internationals and T20 is a new format for us. We will look to learn as we go along,” said the team’s skipper Jhulan Goswami. India kick off their campaign on June 11 against England in Taunton, before which they will play two practice matches.
Jhulan, the pace spearhead of the team, said the key to India’s success will lie in how well the bowlers acclimatise themselves to English conditions and exploit the same. She also expressed confidence in the team’s ability to perform well against teams like Australia and New Zealand and dismissed notions that these teams have a better chance because they are physically stronger.
“That is not necessarily a sign of greater strength,” Jhulan said. “We are a fit bunch and we are mentally tough. The T20 World Cup is a chance for us to promote the game, to hopefully change the scenario of the women’s game in India.”
The senior-most member of the sidem, Anjum Chopra, said the girls have a great chance to have a crack at the other teams in their quest for glory.
