Pakistan make their debut in the ICC World Twenty20 when they meet shell-shocked England at the Oval on Sunday. The pressure is on England as a win for Pakistan would dump the hosts out of the tournament.
England vs Pakistan Live Scorecard
Amazingly, England were beaten by the Netherlands on Friday in one of the biggest shocks you are likely to see in International T20 cricket. England made 162 after being invited to bat by the Dutch. Despite a 102 run opening partnership between Wright and Bopara, England couldn’t cash in. They failed to hit a six in their 20 overs and you couldn’t help thinking a more clinical side would have set a far higher target even though the 162 England posted saw them as huge favourites at the half way stage.
Pietersen missed the Dutch game through injury and Wright and Bopara apart, the English batting order looked desperately short of the artillery needed to reach the rope, never mind clear it.
Forget the absent Pietersen, in the end, all that mattered was the result and England were humiliated by a spirited Dutch side who deservedly got home in the rain off the last ball on a memorable evening at the home of cricket.
Even a win for England will not guarantee progression to the next stage as if 2 or more teams finish level on points, net run rate comes into play and both Pakistan and the Netherlands will know what is required when they meet on Tuesday.
Pakistan’s warm up has been poor. They were comprehensively beaten by the Proteas and India. The warm up match against India could be a good yardstick to their chances as there is always plenty at stake when these rivals meet.
Pakistan pressed the self destruct button in their innings after a frantic start when they had a decent platform. They ended up with 158 and the target was crashed off by India for the loss of just 1 wicket with 3 overs to spare. The ease at which India took the Pakistan attack to pieces is a real concern. On the plus side, they have plenty of firepower if only the likes of Afridi, Akmal and the talented Shehzad can keep their heads when at the crease.
